Now Playing in the YouTube Screening Room: http://youtube.com/ytscreeningroom http://www.nfb.ca/ryan 2005 OSCARS for Best Short Animation Ryan is based on the life of Ryan Larkin, a Canadian animator who, 30 years ago, produced some of the most influential animated films of his time. In the film, we hear the voices of prominent animators and artists discussing Ryan's work, and from waitresses, mission-house caretakers and homeless people who make up Ryan's life. These voices speak through strange, twisted, and disembodied, computer-generated characters--which combine to reflect the film's creator, Chris Landreth. In the words of Anais Nin, "We don't see things as they are. We see things as we are." Some strong language. Viewer discretion is advised.

Dec 4, 2008 - I still find this one of the best 3D animations I know, it's not cliché in how it depicts things as half sketch half 3D, the interview is moving, and the visual ideas (you can see the mind as different coloured shapes, the thermos that loves ryan) and camera angles (looking over the thermos etc...) are something else.

Dec 11, 2008 - 5:00 I remember watching these during commercial on CBC in the 80's. I thought they were wonderful. I loved them. Seeing shapes of things I knew morph into shapes I knew. Wonderful stuff. I don't know why but they had an impact on my life. A positive one.

Dec 21, 2008 - This is amazing animation, I am very impressed. Its the wierdest thing, I am Canadian, my name is Ryan, I had a friend named steph who was a brother to me and my mothers name is Barbara. So many strange similarities. I am also into animation and find your work fascinating. It would be great to talk to you someday, I just may run into you, we'll see. Keep up the amazing work.

Dec 26, 2008 - Wow. So much depth and substanced packed into such a short film. The Visual Emotionality and skewed reality based on fear, hope, dejection, rejection. The scars and wounds, normally hidden, plain to see. 5 Stars! *****
