Oct 23, 2008 - well look at it this way, we have so much food then we can share ours. if we farmed bugs as well then the price of food should go down which would mean more food for poorer countries. bugs grow insanely fast, we pay the orkin man to come and kill them with poisons and what not. why should I poison my family and pets when I could but taking advantage? its not like I sit around shoveling all sorts of food in my mouth every minute of the day either. and seriously do you eat shrimp or lobster?
pookking Says:
Oct 23, 2008 - it would not mean more food for poorer countries....believe it or not but the usa has enough food for themselves and africa the problem is we do not share...no matter how you see it. bugs would be a great survival food but other than that....it is not needed! and no i do not eat shrimp and lobster as i am allergic to shellfish, but you cannot consider those the same as bugs
jacksparrowismydaddy Says:
Oct 23, 2008 - actually I can consider them the same, they are all anthropoids. but to follow your logic because we live in an abundant land we shouldn't try anything new we should just keep depleting the resources we have, wasting money on large animals that we over medicate and abuse all the way to the slaughterhouse and never be allowed to consider a different food source with less resources needed to maintain them. okay good luck with that. its not how I roll but hey to each their own.
pookking Says:
Oct 23, 2008 - i think you mean anthropods, anthropoids are animals with human likeliness; like simians. the problem with eating bugs is also the mental issue we have devoloped over years. im sorry i do not see your logic, because we right now we have everlasting resources. but you are right if someday our resources would come to an end , then this would be a logical and good idea. but right now, we have so many resources, that eating bugs is unnecessary!
jacksparrowismydaddy Says:
Oct 23, 2008 - what mental issues are you talking about? the ick facter maybe? its not that hard to get over it. many cultures have incorporated bugs in their diets for ages. its mostly just us westerners still having issues with it. since you have an allergy I wouldn't recommend it at all, but thats not my goal anyway. the logic is this. we loose more wild habitats as humans expand and build more cities and farms. with exceptions of allergies, bugs are healthier additions then beef, cakes, pies, and pork.
pookking Says:
Oct 24, 2008 - there is more to meat and other foods than there is to bugs bugs are small and you would have to catch a lot for a satisfying meal. so bigger products have the advantage of a more universal use in cooking. i do not see how humans expanding is in the topic because sooner or later , we will expand further and further and this has nothing to do with anything unless you are referring to the land needed for these products, but then again if it isnt for the products it would be for something else
jacksparrowismydaddy Says:
Oct 24, 2008 - yes I am exactly referring to the land needed to produce our food. you say we don't need to eat bugs, I say there is room for a need. I think for a lot of people it can replace a lot of meats, they can also be ground in to flour so you can add them to bread. they wind up in our flour anyway. we can raise tanks and tanks of these suckers to feed an entire football stadium of people in just a few weeks. so yeah they may be small but you can get a whole lot for cheap.
pookking Says:
Oct 24, 2008 - i doubt a lot of people will replace meat with bugs. there is no need. and those who prefer to eat insects are too few therefore we do not need to produce them in masses. unless you can convince everyone to eat them i doubt we need mass production. as i said before, getting over the mental isssus of bugs being "dirty" we have developed over years and years will be hard and most likely impossible
